Saudi Arabia's Red Sea New City is set to become the world's largest energy storage project. The project, which is part of the Saudi Vision 2030 plan, is being invested in and managed by the Red Sea Development Company. Upon completion, the Red Sea Project is expected to generate up to 650,000 MWh of 100% renewable energy, significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 500,000 tons per year.
The Red Sea Project is not only the largest energy storage project under construction globally but also the world's largest off-grid integrated smart energy project. It aims to become the first tourism project in the world to be powered entirely by renewable energy. With more than 28,000 square kilometers of land and water, the project is located on a vast archipelago consisting of over 90 islands. The centerpiece of the project is the world's largest 1,000 MWh energy storage facility, which will allow the city to operate independently of the grid all year round.
The Red Sea New City project serves as a key initiative in Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 plan, aimed at diversifying the country's economy and reducing its dependence on oil. By investing in renewable energy and sustainable development, the project will set new standards for regenerative tourism. The first phase of the project will provide 100% renewable energy to 16 international hotels, an international airport, and other infrastructure through a combination of wind, solar, and storage models. Once complete, the city will be able to provide continuous access to renewable energy, showcasing Saudi Arabia's commitment to creating a more sustainable future.
