Baiyin City in China's Gansu Province recently launched its first photovoltaic storage microgrid pilot project, aimed at developing the agricultural economy with rural characteristics. After a month of testing, the microgrid was put into operation on September 26. The project is expected to increase the power capacity of the station area, stabilize user voltage, and effectively address the issue of unstable power consumption in remote mountainous regions. The microgrid will also meet the increasing demand for reliable electricity among the local population. By using a power quality control strategy, the microgrid gives priority to photovoltaic power supply when there is sufficient sunlight, thereby collecting excess electric energy.
In rural areas, electricity users are often dispersed, and the distribution network has long power supply radius and low regional voltage during certain periods. To address these challenges, the State Grid Baiyin City Power Supply Company has launched the pilot construction of a microgrid. Compared to traditional agricultural distribution network transformation, the microgrid has several advantages, including smaller investment, lower operation and maintenance pressure, and cleaner electricity consumption. Furthermore, the company has installed charging piles next to the energy storage equipment to facilitate the charging of new energy vehicles and electric agricultural machinery for the villagers.
Feedback from the local community has been positive, with villagers experiencing improved performance in their daily agricultural activities. One villager mentioned that since the microgrid is in use, the mower no longer gets stuck when loading corn stalks, the motor has more power, and the water pump can pump more water. This demonstrates the tangible benefits that microgrids can bring to rural areas in terms of productivity and efficiency. As China continues its efforts to develop sustainable and efficient energy solutions, the implementation of microgrids in rural regions like Baiyin City showcases the potential to empower local communities and contribute to the country's overall economic growth.
